Bhubaneswar: The Congress on Monday demanded a white paper from the chief minister Naveen Patnaik, on the steps taken by his government to discuss the Polavaram issue with the Centre and the Andhra Pradesh administration.
Briefing newsmen here, senior Congress leader Umesh Chandra Swain urged the state government to make public all communications made by the chief minister with Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) and Andhra Pradesh government to safeguard the tribal villages and forest lands that are reportedly going to be submerged by the Polavaram irrigation and hydro-electricity project coming up over the river Godavari.
The BJD, which now stands exposed for helping some industrial companies flout environment and forest laws, is now making some wild allegations against the Centre as well as the Andhra Pradesh government.
If the chief minister had any honest intention to address the concerns of the tribals of Malkangiri district, who he claims are going to be affected by the project, he would have taken up the matter with prime minister Manmohan Singh and Andhra Pradesh CM, K Rosaiah much before, Swain said.
He also said that the chief minister all along kept mum fearing that if he would raise the Polavaram issue, the Centre would cancel forest clearances given to the Posco and Vedanta refinery projects.
The chief minister had great opportunity to set things right. He was a key minister in the Atal Behari Vajpayee
