Demanding the early commissioning of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, Congress cadres staged a demonstration in front of the Tirunelveli Railway Junction on Thursday.
Led by former Union Minister R. Dhanushkodi Athithan, Tirunelveli MP S. S. Ramasubbu and president of Tirunelveli Parliamentary Constituency Youth Congress president T. S. Saravanakumar, the protestors raised slogans demanding the early commissioning of the KKNPP and condemning the prolonged power cuts being enforced across Tamil Nadu.
Inaugurating the agitation, Mr. Ramasubbu said the KKNPP reactors, which had been built with state-of-the-art safety features were the safest in its category and hence there was no need for panic among the people living nearby. Moreover, the electricity to be generated by the reactors of KKNPP will lessen Tamil Nadu’s power crisis to a greater extent,” he said.
Mr. Athithan charged that those who were organising the anti-nuke protests across the country and around KKNPP were misleading the innocent public with false and malicious propaganda and giving the public wrong information about nuke power.
“Since great scientists like former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam have certified that the KKNPP reactors with futuristic safety features would be the safest nuclear reactors in the world now, the public should support the programme,” he appealed.
Youth Congress general secretary T. Kamaraj, party’s Tirunelveli east district president Mohan Kumara Raja, Tirunelveli city president Sundararaja Perumal, youth congress functionaries A.B. Saravanan were among those who participated in the agitation.
