Conservation of rivers inevitable for protecting Vembanad wetlands

G K Nair Implementation of the Pampa Action Plan (PAP) and similar projects for other three rivers, Achancovil, Manimala and Meenachil, is inevitable for making conservation of the Vembanad Wetland System (VWS), which has recently been included in the National Wetland Conservation Programme (NWCP), a successful endeavour. The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, considering the significance of the Vembanad system, declared as Ramsar site of international importance, included it in the NWCP with 100 per cent Central assistance. Given this latest development, the conservation and rejuvenation of the four ailing rivers draining into the Vembanad Lake through Kuttanadu, the rice bowl of Kerala, also acquires momentum, experts claimed. The pollution level of these rivers and the Vembanad lake is alarmingly high. They are also the main source of water for about six million people in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Alappuzha districts, including Kuttanadu, they said.
