Mumbai: The National Green Tribunal has directed the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) to take into consideration recommendations of the Madhav Gadgil committee and those mentioned in the Kasturirangan panel report while granting a clearance in the ecologically sensitive zones (ESZ) of the Western Ghats.
Senior counsel Raj Panjwani who appeared for the petitioners said the fallout of the order is that the government will have to give reasons as to why it is opting for one recommendation over the other for each activity that it allows in the ESZ.
On Tuesday, the MoEF informed the tribunal that it had in-principle accepted the Kasturirangan committee report. The MoEF had issued a memorandum on October 19 announcing its in-principle acceptance of the report.
Justice Swatantra Kumar then asked the NGOs, who have filed the petition seeking consideration of the Madhav Gadgil report, while granting environment clearances, to prepare and submit a comparative chart between the two reports. The tribunal also asked the MoEF to submit a copy of the draft notification that it plans to issue to invite objections and suggestions on the Kasturirangan report.
