Cooked chicken, boiled eggs safe to eat: Experts

Experts at a seminar yesterday said bird flu is a national crisis but we can tackle it by taking preventive measures. They said cooked chicken and boiled eggs are safe to eat. Prof Khwaja Nazimuddin, secretary general of APB, presided over the seminar organised by Association of Physicians of Bangladesh (APB) at the Birdem auditorium in the city. About 250 doctors from different city hospitals attended the seminar. Prof Mujibur Rahman presented the keynote speech at the seminar. In his keynote speech, Prof Mujib said, "In Bangladesh we do not have the bird flu situation that can turn into a pandemic.' There is no case of human flu virus infection so far in the country, he said adding, we don't need to worry if we take preventive measures. He advised all to take protection while working at the poultry farms. He also suggested taking vaccines every year. Prof Mujib said from 1889 to 1977, thousands of people died of human flu infection across the world in five pandemic. "If pandemic occurs for the sixth time, it would be a disaster for the human being,' warned the physicians. Prof Dr Khwaja Nazimuddin said from 1996 about 330 people died of human flu infection, of them 81died in Indonesia, 42 in Vietnam, 17 in Thailand, 16 in China and 15 died in Egypt. Doctors at the seminar said Bangladesh is a developing country where more than 40% people are under the poverty line who are not conscious about the viral diseases like bird flu. They stressed the need for raising awareness among people about the preventive measures of bird flu.
