Apart from ambitious plans in the areas of transport, tourism, waste management and infrastructure, the Corporation has also set about tackling the problem of poverty with financial backing through the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The Corporation has prepared a concept paper which details the living condition of the poor in Kochi city in Kerala and its outskirts and has proposed several projects in areas like housing, sanitation, electrification, education and employment. This has been incorporated in the City Development Plan (CDP), which is in the final stage of preparation. A Rs 475-crore project is envisaged for poverty alleviation.
