The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is under pressure from a corporator of the Mumbra Ward Council (MWC) for taking action against those involved in violation of Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) guidelines all over the city. Mahendra Kumurlekar, an independent corporator supported by the Congress, has undertaken a step to protect the city's creek coastlines. The corporator has given a notice of proposal to the effect before the forthcoming General Body (GB) meeting. In his notice Kurmurlekar has made it clear that there were large-scale violations of the CRZ guidelines in Kharegaon, Vitava, Kalva, Kolshet, Mumbra and Kausa. He also pointed out to such breaches dominated rural belt of Diva under the MWC. Kumurlekar has alleged that builders in these regions are indulging in mass scale destruction of mangroves. They fill marshy land on the banks of the creek for construction by killing mangroves. Members from the opposition as well as some from the ruling Shiv Sena-BJP alliance are likely to support the notice. The civic administration will clear its stand on the subject in this meeting. Notably the issue has been hanging fire since the last several months. Pandurang Patil of the Sena has been up in the arms against the corporation for neglecting the dumping of earth by dozens of BMC-owned dumpers illegally into the creek land off the coast of Kolshet and Mumbra but the corporation has not taken any stand on this issue so far. Narayan Pawar, a Congress corporator and the members of the civic Standing Committee had also raised the issue in the committee meetings but without success. He simply managed to attract the attention of the House.
