A proposal to construct houses of 500 sq ft to rehabilitate each slum family has been submitted to the general body .
A proposal about the redevelopment of slums was discussed during the standing committee meeting in the first week of August.Corporators Shankar Kemse, Ravindra Dhangekar and Prithviraj Sutar gave supplementaries demanding more space which the standing committee agreed to. The civic body will take a final call on Wednesday .
“The civic administration has planned a special purpose vehicle for developing slums. The administration should take the responsibility to construct houses for slums,“ states the proposal.
The proposal added that the “administration should build houses of 500 sq ft to increases the standard of living of the slum dwellers“. Urban planners and experts said unplanned settlements are spreading along the hill slopes and water bodies in the city . The slum population is steadily increasing and is now approximately 40% of the city's headcount.
Nearly 4,000 houses will be built for slum dwellers in the city under various schemes such as basic services for urban poor (BSUP) and Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). The houses are being built by the PMC, the state and Union governments.Houses of 270 sq ft have been allotted to each occupant and nearly Rs 3 lakh has been spent on each house. The owner has to pay 10%, while the remaining comes from the government. As per the mission documents of the BSUP, provisions include security of housing in affordable prices, improved housing, water supply and sanitation.
The programme aims at ensuring delivery through convergence of other already existing universal services of the government for education, health and social security . The BSUP ensures that the urban poor are provided housing near their place of occupation. Construction of houses was delayed due to changes in the laws and rules. Funds expected from the Union government too did not reach in time.
