The revised estimate of total investment needed for construction of rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMSDY) has shot up to Rs 133,000 crore from the earlier Rs 60,000 crore. This estimate does not include the cost of maintenance. It was initially planned to cover 1.06 lakh rural habitations under the programme, since increased to 1.07 lakh. This scheme is administered by the Union ministry for rural development. Cost overrun on account of delay is partly responsible.
