Indian Medical Association has joined hands with Credai Clean City Movement to tackle the increasing threat of biomedical waste in the city.
Credai has signed an MoU with IMA to collect biomedical waste from apartment complexes in the city and to treat it at the Indian Medical Association’s Goes Eco-friendly (IMAGE) plant. The IMAGE plant, which is located at Kanjikode in Palakkad, has been functioning in full swing.

It is pointed out that biomedical waste such as needles, syringes, cotton, sanitary napkins, diapers are emanating in large volumes from apartment complexes. A minimum of 50 gm biomedical waste is generated in a house daily. In the corporation limits there are more than 300 apartment complexes and over 10,000 apartments.
This will be the first ever project in the country aimed at scientific treatment and disposal of biomedical waste generated from households.
The project is launched as part of CCCM, an NGO formed in 2007 by builders as part of their CSR activities focusing on health, hygiene, safety and environment.
CCCM has till date installed 1258 bio bins and 2395 bio pots across Kerala covering 3,2000 families. It currently processes 52 tonnes of bio-degradable waste daily and 18,980 tonnes of bio-degradable rejections annually.
