The panchayat pradhans of Malda's Ratua I and Harischandrapur II blocks have alleged inadequate relief for over 50,000 marooned people in the areas. The Ganga and the Phulhar are flowing above the extreme danger level in the district and the Mahananda, Tangon and the Punarbhaba are in spate. Twenty-one villages in Mahanandatola gram panchayat and 14 villages at Bilaimari in Ratua are under waist-deep water. Both the areas are cut off from the rest of the block for the past one week. Block development officer (BDO) Lakshman Halder visited the affected places today. Mahanandatola gram panchayat pradhan Latika Mondal complained about the inadequate relief. "I am afraid that I might have to face the wrath of the marooned people if I go with the paltry relief that I have received from the administration.' There are over 40,000 flood-affected people in the area. "But I have received 275 polythene sheets, 600 dhotis, 200 sarees, 250 lungis and 250 clothes for children,' she said. Mondal alleged that although the villagers were marooned since August 14, no senior official from the administration had visited them. Bilaimari gram panchayat pradhan Nadi Mondal also has similar charges against the administration. Sudhir Yadav, the CPM member of Bhakuria gram panchayat in Harischandrapur, said resentment of the people over inadequate relief has been building up. The BDO admitted that the relief supplied was inadequate. He said he had asked the panchayat pradhans to submit a list of articles that the people need. "But I am yet to receive the lists.'
