CRZ violation: 74 structures likely to face axe in Canacona

The ghost of CRZ 1991 is back to haunt the coastal residents of Canacona taluka, as in first two phases of demolitions, axe is likely to fall on 74 structures shortly. According to sources, the South Goa Demolition Squad acting under the guidance of Collector (South), who has been issued directives by the High Court, had already fixed January 12 and 13 for demolition of about 40 illegal structures in Poinguinim. Sources further said another 34 illegal CRZ structures at Loliem-Polem will be taken up for demolitions on January 18 and 19. It may be recalled that High Court taking strong cognizance of rampant violations of CRZ 1991, had in the past strongly reprimanded various coastal local bodies in the State. Some were even penalised who dared to ignore its directives. It is learnt that most of the earmarked CRZ structures of Poinguinim are in coastal Talpona and Galgibaga areas, mainly belonging to the fisher folk communities, while in Loliem-Polem structures pertains to traditional coastal residents. Both the local bodies has reportedly served demolition orders, giving sufficient time to the concerned parties to remove the alleged illegal structures by themselves that are existing in contravention of the CRZ 1991 rules and regulations. However, sources informed that none of the parties served with notices acted nor the local bodies initiated further action to take up actual demolitions of illegal structures due to various factors.
