Cumbarjua fishermen threaten agitation over dead fish

Cumbarjua Fishermen's Ekvott and Cumbarjua Nadi Bachao Samiti have threatened to agitate if the government continues with its ostrich-like attitude to the death of fish in the river. Addressing a press conference here, Samiti President and Panch member Nityanand Sawant and secretary Mahendra Gaonkar said fishing activity has come to a halt as fish is dying due to release of discharge by a sea food factory located nearby. They have also decided to meet the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat as authorities like State Pollution Control Board, village panchayat, health authorities have failed to address their grievances. Replying to questions, Sawant said they are not opposed to the factory but it should operate adhering to all pollution control norms. It was on February 17 that dead fish was first noticed in the river after which the locals sent representations to various government bodies. Nityanand claimed that the factory donated Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the sarpanch who released Rs 3000 each to the affected families totally Rs 1.59 lakh. The remaining amount (Rs 41000) was kept for the panchayat fund, he said adding that they are not in agreement with keeping part of the money for the VP fund.
