Cycle rally against Tipai dam in Monipur

People of north-eastern Indian state Manipur and Assam have been raising their voice continuously against construction of 500 meter high Tipaimukh dam that will severely damage life and bio-diversity in that area as well as Sylhet region in Bangladesh.
On Sunday, Manipuri Students and club members of Kakching Khunou and Umathel areas in Thoubal district with the assistance of Social Action Development Organiz-ation, brought out a cycle rally against construction of Tipaimukh Dam, Imphal based the daily Sangai Express reported.The protesters carried placards written 'Don't kill people by big dam,' 'Take uniform consent,' 'Nothing can compensate the loss of 78 lac of trees and bamboos,' and 'Nothing can compensate the loss of 25,822 hectares of community forest land,' etc.
They sent memorandum through fax to the Prime Minister of India, Power Minister, Minister of State (Independent Charge)Environment and Forest, Government of India and Chief Minister of Manipur.
The news paper said the cycle rally was a part of agitation prevailing in Assam and Manipur aswell as in Bangladesh against the construction of Tipai dam at the confluence of Tuivai and Tuirial rivers in Churachandpur district.
The cycle rally started at Kakching Khunou College campus and touched Junior Navodya School,Kakching Khunou Bazar, Angom Thong, Hijam Leikai, Chesapat, Kakching Khunou,Umathel, and it finally ended at Kakching Khunou College campus.
Students of Hijam Irabot Memorial School, and Kakching Khunou Chesa-pat High School, and members of Progressive Youth Club, United Youth Club, and youths of KakchingK hunou and Umathel have participated in the cycle rally.
