Cyclists create awareness on solar energy

KOLKATA, 15 OCT: Two cyclists and a tableau covered 1,200 km in 10 days to create awareness about solar energy, rainwater harvesting and other issues related to sustainable development. The rally, entitled “Sabujer Abhijan ~ Pahar Theke Sagar” was organised by Sulekha and Sulekha Solar along with the NGO Freed. The programme was supported by the department of water resources, investigation and development, department of environment, state renewable energy development agency and Indian Oil Corporation.
The rally started from Alipurduar and passed through Coochbehar, Falakata, Dhupguri, Moyanguri, Malbazar, Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, Darjeeling, Mirik, Islampur, Dalkhola and then covered Krishnnagar, Barast and finally reached Diamond Harbour.
A senior state government official said awareness of the need to conserve energy is very important and thousands of people came out on the streets to greet the participants.
Sulekha Managing Director Kaushik Moitra said environmental awareness among children is important and schoolchildren from the Hills and plains joined the rally when it passed through their area. sns
