Pune, September 24 At a time when the country is anticipating the first Genetically Modified (GM) food crop to be approved on a commercial basis, Centre for Youth Development and Activities (CYDA) has launched Hamara Beej in the city to spread awareness and mobilisation on GM foods, called I am no lab rat. With Bt Brinjal in the last year of trials and the biotech industry claiming that this is the first of its kind vegetable for commercial use, CYDA's Mathew Mattan points out that there is no independent research to prove that it is safe for the environment and health. Scientifically it is also proven that genetic engineering is inherently imprecise, unpredictable and irreversible and the adverse effects of such GM are well documented.
