Ahmedabad: For more than a decade, a deadly trade of pumping recycled infected vials, medicine bottles with high dozes, IV packs and syringes was being run right under the nose of the state authorities. These infected and hazardous medicine bottles and syringes were washed, refilled, packed and re-injected into the market by 23 units inside and three outside Gujarat.
Medicine bottles found their way even to a honey manufacturing plant in Isanpur. Nine of the dubious facilities identified by the investigating authorities were located in Gujarat Industrial Development Estate i (GIDC) while one was located at stones-throw distance from the high court. It was when Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) raided some godowns that the huge inter-state racket got busted.
A list of 26 pharma and medical goods packaging companies has been found from the diary of a scrap godown owner in Ahmedabad, whose godown was raided and tonnes of used syringes and medical waste was seized.
"AMC can only facilitate the details of these dubious traders. We want a credible agency to take up this investigation, including the police and since some names have emerged from Rajasthan and MP, it becomes a state subject. In such cases, we plan to moot for an early warning system to alert consumers across all states, in case such medicines, syringes or IV bottles enter the market," says AMC commissioner IP Gautam.
