An emergency meeting of leading political parties convened by Communist Party of India (CPI) in Tirupur on Wednesday has resolved to conduct agitation in protest against the proposed move by Kerala government to construct dams across various inter-state rivers that bring water to Tamil Nadu. The meeting, attended by representatives of CPI, Congress, DMK, DMDK, MDMK, PMK, All India Samatuva Makkal Katchi, Periyar Dravida Kazhagam and Forward Bloc, also had made an appeal to the Union Government to intervene in the issue to ensure that riparian rights of farmers in the Bhavan river basin system and in the command area of Amaravathi Dam in Tamil Nadu were protected. The CPI (M) and AIADMK representatives stayed away from the meeting. CPI district secretary M. Subramanian said that the demonstration in the issue would be held in front of the Corporation office, here on July 6. “We want to highlight the opposition of agrarian community to the plan by Kerala government to revive the Attapady Valley Irrigation Project which aims at construction of dam across River Siruvani.” Demonstration in Erode Members of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and various farmers associations staged a demonstration in front of the Head Post Office in Erode on Wednesday protesting against the Kerala government's proposal to build a dam across River Siruvani at Attapadi.
