Zeneca, the agrochemicals company, condemned the damage inflicted on its trial of genetically-modified poplar trees in southern England as an act of "senseless vandalism". The trees are being grown as part of an eight year European Union research programme into using less energy and chlorine in paper-making. They have reduced lignin content, a constituent that has to be broken down during the pulping season.
