Date-palm orchards come under viral attack

Date growers of different areas of Khairpur are worried due to a viral attack on date-palm orchards. The disease has affected roots and trunks of date palms and production of dates.
A delegation of leaders of the Sindh Hari Committee, led by Anwar Lodro, told journalists that the date-palm orchards in taluka Kingri including Ahmedpur, Deh Manganwari, Mohammad Saleh Sohag, Kanhar village, Bago Phulpoto, have been affected by this disease.
Zulfiqar Sohag said that a mysterious disease has attacked date-palm orchards in Mohammad Saleh Sohag village and as many as 50 date-palm trees have dried hence growers had to chop those trees.
A grower of Noorpur union council, Kingri taluka, Ghulam Jafar Phulpoto, told this correspondent that date-palm orchards in the UC were under viral attack, while his orchards comprising 150 date-palm trees, have been destroyed. He said that none of the agriculture officials or any of the date-palm experts visited the affected areas.
He said that for the last three years this virus attacks date-palm orchards during this season as a result of which entire orchards get destroyed.
He said that Khairpur was known as district of date-palm due to rich date-palm orchards but there was no research institute here to guide the affected date-palm growers in such circumstances.
