The Delhi High Court has held Delhi Development Authority's (DDA) poor town planning responsible for slums to mushroom in the Capital. "One of the principal cause of proliferation of slums in Delhi is that the DDA has not been earmarking housing for the weaker sections of the society around industrial estates and residential colonies" noted Justice Pradeep Nandrajog. The observation of the court came while disposing a petition which sought to change the land use of a plot in Narela comprising of 900 housing units, intended for relocating slum dwellers. The petition filed by one Ajit Singh, claimed that the Centre had acquired his land under a 1961 policy and in lieu offered him alternate plot at Narela opposing the proposed slum relocation which was unacceptable to him.
