QUITO – The death toll from the magnitude-7.8 earthquake that hit Ecuador’s north coast on April 16 has risen to 659, the National Risk Management Secretariat, or SNGR, said. A total of 29,067 people are still being housed in shelters and 40 others are listed as missing, the secretariat said. Medical personnel treated 27,732 people, including 4,605 for injuries, in connection with the temblor, one of the most powerful to ever hit the Andean nation, the secretariat said. Rescue teams pulled 113 people from the rubble alive, according to the secretariat, which said hundreds of buildings, including 281 schools, were damaged by the earthquake. There have been 900 aftershocks since the quake, with six over magnitude-6. The coastal province of Manabi is the region most affected by the earthquake, with 645 people killed, 33 others listed as missing and 24,117 in shelters. In neighboring Esmeralda province, no deaths have been confirmed, but 3,543 people are living in shelters. Five deaths have been confirmed in the tropical province of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, seven in the coastal province of Guayas, one in the Andean province of Pichincha and one in Chimborazo, the secretariat said. The government has declared a state of emergency in Esmeraldas, Manabi, Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, Guayas, Santa Elena and Los Rios provinces.
