DIBRUGARH, Sept 11: The future of the government plan to move a few rhinos from Kaziranga National Park to other areas will be decided after animal experts ascertain the causes which made a translocated animal to move out of its new habitat.
A male rhino, which was tranquillized and moved from Pabitora Wildlife Santuary to Manas on April 12 this year, has travelled almost 80 kilometres since it moved out of its new home a week back, crossing two overflowing rivers and flooded areas. It is presently near Kamalpur in Rangiya subdivision. The forest officials tracking him cannot tranquillize him since it would be impossible to move the huge animal because of the floods. They are hoping that the rhino, which is around six years old, will progress towards the Bornodi Wildlife Sanctuary that is just 10 km further to the east. The officials would be in a better position to tranquilize the animal there and move it. However, they are yet to decide where they will move it.
A similar incident had happened almost ten years back when a rhino from Pobitora had crossed the River Brahmaputra to reach the south bank.
The government had mooted the plan to transfer a few of the animals from Kaziranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to other sanctuaries after conservationists said that their habitat in these two places were shrinking and would not be able to support the rhino population. They had also expressed fear that an epidemic could wipe out the whole population if they were confined to a particular area.
However, the latest development has raised questions about the feasibility of the government plan. Only the study, which experts intend to carry out, will be able to reveal the causes behind the recent phenomenon,
Meanwhile, conservationists are of the opinion that the rhino might have moved out of Manas as its biological needs were not being met here.
