Nitish not serious about relief: Raghuvansh
NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that the floods in Bihar be declared a national calamity. It urged the Prime Minister to intervene to ensure that the Army and the Air Force came to the rescue of lakhs of people who were marooned and in danger of drowning.
Party spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad said that India must talk to Nepal and work out a way to repair the breach in the Kosi Dam.
Mr. Prasad said reports suggested that there was a three kilometre-long breach on the Kosi dam in the Sursuri district of Nepal. He alleged that a few weeks earlier when engineers from Bihar went there for annual maintenance work, they were beaten up and sent back without being allowed to do their job.
Mr. Prasad claimed that a first information report on the incident was filed by the engineers with the Nepal police.
The BJP said that as a result of the breach the river had changed its course and the swift flowing waters could wash away thousands of people.
The party said no politics should be played at this juncture and help must be given by the Centre to help the State meet this challenge.
Meanwhile, Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh has accused the Bihar government of inaction in tackling the flood situation in the State.
Mr. Singh said at a press conference here on Tuesday that the Nitish Kumar government was not "serious' about providing relief to the affected people. "Despite 20 districts being badly affected by floods, the State government has failed to take adequate steps to provide relief to the people. It has made no estimate of loss of human lives.
Lalu to meet PM
Mr. Kumar has not sought any help from the Centre despite the worsening of the flood situation.'
Mr. Singh said RJD leader Lalu Prasad was meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek help in providing relief to the flood-affected people as Mr. Kumar did not seem to be "serious about the situation.'
The State government did not have any contingency plan, he alleged.
"Our leader Lalu Prasad Yadav is meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek his help in providing relief to flood-affected people in Bihar as the State Chief Minister does not seem serious about the situation,' he the Minister said adding that the Bihar government had no contingency plan in place to tackle the situation.
