Deforestation is the "predominant cause" for desertification and droughts in the country, observed Dr. I. Sundar, from Annamalai University, in a paper presented at a State-level seminar organised by the Tamil Nadu Environment Council in Salem recently.According to Dr. Sundar, deforestation is a "continuous process" as the country is losing 1.3 million hectares of forest cover every year.
