Forests occupy only five per cent of the total land area of Pakistan and are being "depleted increasingly". According to a World Bank report, Pakistan is facing one of the "highest rate of deforestation" in the world. The total forest area of the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the Northern Areas, is 4.2 million hectares which is five per cent of the total country area. One-third of the forest area is productive and remaining two-third is maintained for environmental stability.
