Minister for interaction with industry: The Union Minister for Environment & Forests, Mr. Suresh P. Prabhu, on Thursday remained non-committal over the controversial issue of permitting industrial plantations on degraded forest lands. He, however, favoured interactions with the industry for the formulation of a national policy on development of degraded forest lands. Inaugurating a workshop on 'Greening of Wastelands: Increasing the forest cover', Mr. Prabhu shared the concern of the industry on continued depletion of forests and agreed that the forest cover should be increased to 33 per cent of total land area from the existing 4 per cent.
