The Delhi Forest Department seems to be eating up the very forest it is supposed to protect. The department has violated Supreme Court orders by constructing a four-room office building in the Kamala Nehru ridge forest, part of the Northern Ridge. The Forest department, however denies this. The department has constructed a 45-square mt building, in excess to the presently allocated 245 sq mt space. The Supreme Court had capped all activity on the ridge in 1994-95 and the Forest Department was asked to ensure that no new construction comes up in the area.Conservator of Forests HC Dhawan, however, insists that his department has not violated any Supreme Court orders on the ridge. He added that the department has constructed "a temporary structure to be used as a store."
