Hit badly by the demolition crisis and barely a year to go for the municipal elections, the Delhi Government had the aam admi in mind while unveiling a feel-good Budget, taking the tax-cut route to bring down prices. With the Centre allowing states some leeway on fixing Value Added Tax (VAT), Finance Minister Dr A K Walia went on to slash the rates on a host of items ranging from LPG to desi ghee, coffee, chappals, construction goods and even puja material (see box). While officials and trade bodies are yet to work out how these cuts would actually impact prices, LPG rates may come down by somewhere between Rs 12-Rs 24, according to top government sources.
