The euphoria over the prospect of Delhi getting additional power in the coming months has died down and as things stand the city could well be in for a long sweltering summer ahead. While the Centre is yet to agree to the State Government's demand for 400 MW from the un-allocated pool, the 250 MW from the Damodar Valley Corporation that the city was promised is also not being supplied. According to officials in the Union Power Ministry, the Capital will get the assured quantum from DVC, but for now the city's wait has just got longer. Union Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh said while the Ministry was yet to take a stand on the issue of increasing Delhi's quota from the Centre's unallocated share, arrangements would be made to ensure power from DVC. "I have had a word with the DVC Chairman and he has assured me that alternative arrangements are being made to provide power to Delhi,' Mr. Ramesh said. Citing the reasons for the delay in supply of power from DVC to Delhi, officials said: "There is some problem with two units of Mejia thermal power station of DVC. While the 250 MW Mejia V is not running to full capacity, the commissioning of the 250 MW Mejia VI has been delayed by a few weeks. Two units of 250 MW each of Chandarpura VII and VIII are also running behind schedule because of law and order problems at the site in Jharkhand.' Left to make the most of what it has, the State Government now has little option but to enhance the generation at its plants and also ensure that the discoms purchase power. "The discoms have been selling power. They have enough money to make purchases even if the cost of power is on the higher side. Also, the generation at city's power plants needs to be augmented,' said a Power Ministry official. Referring to the slackness over firming of power purchase agreements by two of three discoms, Power Minister A.K. Walia said: "They have assured us that they have tied up with other States. And as of now we do not foresee any problems.' He said the State Government would seek the Centre's help in securing additional power from DVC and other sources.
