Demand for strict action against forest mafia in Orissa

Anguished over the rapid depletion of the Orissa's forest wealth, The Orissa Krushal Mahasangh has demanded that the timber mafia be booked under the National Security Act (NSA) and ex-servicemen be entrusted with the job of guarding the forests. The Mahasangh is the biggest organisation of its kind, looking after the interests of the farmers and the environment, has also sought strict implementation of environmental laws throughout the state. Alleging that timber worth crore was being smuggled out of various reserve forests of the state, the Mahasangh led by politician-turned-environmentalist, Banka Behari Das warned , "This could have disastrous consequences for it is already facing a threat from pollution caused by factories and prawn culture,".
