Dengue claims five lives in Kaliachak

Five persons have died of dengue in Kaliachak in the last three days, district health department sources said here today. At least 30 others with dengue symptoms are presently undergoing treatment in the Malda Medical College Hospital (MMCH) and the Kaliachak block primary health centre, the sources said. The district health department has decided to send a team to Kaliachak to take stock of the situation. A senior district health official identified the dead as Reshma Bibi, 25, Momi Bibi, 27, Ahmed Ali, 25, Saheb Sheikh, 50, and Khabiruddin Sheikh, 70. They all had high fever, coupled with acute bodyache and loose motion, the official added. They were initially admitted in the Kaliachak BPHC and later referred to the MMCH. Block medical officer of health in Kaliachak-I, Rezzak Ali Biswas, admitted that a good number of patients are undergoing treatment for high fever. The BJP-run Kaliachakp-II gram panchayat pradhan, Sabina Khatun, alleged that patients admitted in the Kaliachak BPHC were being forced to buy medicines from outside. Kaliachak-I BDO Diptarka Basu said he has already discussed the matter with block health officials and has asked them to provide good treatment to the patients. Chief medical officer of health Dilip Mandal admitted that the biochemistry report of two of the five deceased persons confirmed dengue, while the blood of the three other persons could not be tested before they died. Dr Mandal said that a medical team would be visiting the Nayabasti village in Kaliachak soon.
