JORHAT, July 17: Consumers of the Urban Water Supply scheme here have been literally left high and dry with the water hard coming in at a trickle and many taps running dry in the last few days. Venting his ire on the poor services of the Urban Water Supply scheme, Partha Baruah said that the raising of the tariff from Rs 120 to Rs 312 was unjustified given the hours of water which is supplied to most houses. "In the evening when previously two hours of water was usually given, nowadays no water comes and our overhead tank of 50 litres becomes empty,' he said. "In the morning too the water flow is so scant that there is hardly a trickle,' he further said. Speaking on similar lines Ranjan Neog of Choladhora said that the people should call a public meeting and raise the voice unitedly against the exorbitant tariff hike of more than 150 per cent. When the rate was hiked there were dharnas and protests from pressure groups like the AJYCP and AASU but these fizzled after a couple of months. Both the groups had appealed to the people not to pay the raised tariff and many people had to pay hefty bills with fines which had accumulated over the months when a disconnection that was issued. But the water supply has not deteriorated to such an extent that the people are faced with problems everyday.
