Even though the Assam State Government has been spending a huge amount of money to increase the forest cover of the state, a section of local political leaders, with the alleged active support from the higher officials of the State Forest Department in Goalpara, have embarked on an intensified drive to destroy the forests in the district drive to destroy the forests in the district and are, thereby, amassing fortunes for themselves at the cost of Nature, its eco-system and the society at large.
