The World Bank has agreed to revoke the suspension of aid for the Maharashtra Urban Transport Project (MUTP) as oil minister Murli Deora weaved his Mumbai magic on officials of the multilateral agency in a sideshow to his sales trip to the US for hawking 55 exploration blocks. The decision is likely to be taken at the bank board's next meeting.
The turnaround in the bank's stand came after Deora, carrying a brief from chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Union finance minister P Chidambaram, reasoned with top agency officials. After his oil show in Houston, Deora went to Washington to tell Bank brass the differences did not merit aid suspension, which was detrimental to the interest of Mumbai's millions.
