For a long time, much before the construction of reservoirs, people were solely dependent on tanks and wells for drinking water. With the construction of dams and reservoirs, some ancient wells have lost their importance. Neglect by officials and citizens alike has reduced wells such as the 17th Century Nucchambali Bhavi in Dharwad, Karnataka to garbage bins. This can be witnessed in the cultural capital of north Karnataka, Dharwad - a city which once had over 614 wells and over 100 natural tanks.
