The Opposition Telugu Desam leaders here on Monday said they would scrap the MoUs signed by the Congress government with the Jindal South West Aluminium Limited and Ras-al-Khaimah for supply of bauxite ore, if their party is voted to power in the ensuing general elections. Addressing a media conference here on Monday, the TD city and district unit presidents, Mr B. Satyanarayana Murthy and Dr C.M.A. Zaheer Ahmed, alleged that the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, had ignored public opinion on bauxite mining. "Our leader Mr Chandrababu Naidu when he was Chief Minister dropped the proposal of bauxite mining in Vizag Agency after it was opposed by the public. But now Dr Rajasekhar Reddy seems to be ignoring the public opinion,' Mr Satyanarayana Murthy said. The TD leader also said Jindal belonged to the Congress and several ruling party leaders were involved in both the bauxite projects. They also faulted the Congress government for giving the clearances without organising grama sabhas and without considering their opinion. "There are many unanswered questions related to the displacement of tribals and ill effects of bauxite mining on environment,' Mr Murthy said. Dr Ahmed said their party will launch a padayatra in Araku and Anantagiri Agency mandals from Tuesday to create an awareness among the tribals about the affects of mining. The TD men will tour about 45 tribal hamlets in the two mandals during the four-day padayatra, he said. He added that the tribals were totally opposed to the mining and they would intensify their agitation.
