The Municipal Corporation might have allocated lakhs of rupees to upgrade water supply network in villages and colonies but in reality not much has been done about it till date. Residents still have to struggle to get clean potable water. In 2006-07, Hallomajra, Dadu Majra, Maloya, Palsora and Kajheri were handed over to the MC so that it can provide them essential services like water, sewerage and storm water drainage. It was proposed that canal water will be provided to the villages where it was not available. The projects which were taken up included augmentation and development of water supply network in different villages. An amount of Rs 102.26 lakh was allocated for the same. For the new schemes, an additional amount of Rs 3 crore has been sanctioned in the MC budget for this fiscal. However, for the inhabitants of these villages and colonies, it may still take some more budgetary allocations till clean water reaches their homes. Social activist Gaurav Gaur, who teaches in the Department of Social Welfare, Panjab University, said: "People in these villages don't even have access to basic necessities like water and electricity. It is an everyday struggle for them. People drink water from the sources they use for washing clothes or utensils.' Gaur, along with students of the department, visited various villages as part of their field trips. The situation was found to be dismal. Former Mayor Kamlesh said: "It would be helpful if the plans made are executed. Water does not reach houses in colonies. If at all it does, the pressure is too low. And when these villagers use water from ponds or wells, there is a threat of diseases spreading. The Municipal Corporation cannot blame the residents for not keeping the area clean. They should ensure that clean drinking water is available for everyone. As councillors, we get money allocated for our areas. But these need to be utilised adequately.'
