Development axe on trees

Hazaribagh: Four-laning of Ranchi-Patna stretch of NH-33 has started affecting the green cover of the district. In the last 10 days, about 600 to 700 sal trees were felled on both sides of an 8km stretch of NH-33 passing through the famous Hazaribagh wildlife sanctuary in Padma. The felling of of trees by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) without waiting for approval from the government has not only angered environmentalists but also officials of forest department who lodged an FIR against the concerned contractor yesterday. Sources in the forest department also admitted threat to about 90,000 trees on the 135km Barhi to Ranchi stretch of NH-33. They alleged that large number of workers and machines were used to fell the trees and transport it to other places so as to avoid any trouble.
