The tribal population in Dhemaji district in Assam who claim to have been living in forest areas for over three decades, have alleged that they are often served eviction notices by the government instead of taking steps to provide them with land pattas as per the existing policy of Government of India regarding regularisation of pre-1980 eligible encroachments. The Inspector General of Forest through a letter informed the State governments and State Forest Departments that there is no change in the policy of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest with regard to regularisation of pre-1980 eligible encroachments and commitment with reference to forest-tribal interface on the disputed settlement claims.
