One elderly man died on Saturday while more than 50 others have fallen sick due to a diarrhea outbreak in Fulbariya of Siraha district. One Nar Bahadur Magar, 60, of Chhaghare, Fulbariya-6 of the district died after being taken ill due to a serious bout of diarrhea, Kantipur Daily reported. Jiwach Saha, a local, told the daily that the whole village has been badly affected due to the epidemic that hit the village four days ago. Health assistant of local Mirchaiya health post, Suresh Singh, said that polluted drinking water from a nearby well and lack of sanitation has resulted in the outbreak of the disease. He added that most of the patients are suffering from vomiting and diarrhea together. As there are no tube-wells in the village, the locals have been forced to drink the polluted water from the well since many years. Few among those suffering from the disease are getting treatment at the Mirchaiya health post, but most of them are being treated in the village itself by a team of health workers sent from the district headquarters. Bishnu Maya Pariyar said that 5 of her family members including her 6-month-old baby have become bed-ridden with the disease. "Almost all the people of the village have fallen sick and there is no one to take care of the patient or get them to hospital," she said, adding, "although a team of health workers arrived in the village, because there is shortage of medicines in the village, patients are not getting good treatment." nepalnews.com ag June 02 08
