With many models of cars coming out with diesel versions and newer models being introduced, the Environment Ministry is comtemplating adopting stricter pollution control measures for diesel-run passenger cars, which may make many cars out of reach for ordinary customers. The Central Pollution control Board has suggested stringent quality control for diesel passenger vehicles to reduce the "visible pollution" in the cities by about 25 per cent. The suggestions made by the CPCB are currently under active consideration by the Environment Protection Board under the Ministry of Environment and,if implemented, would increase the price of a diesel-run passenger car by at least Rs 60,000.
