Coal belt police have pulled up their socks to wage war against drunken driving and illegal coal mining. Lakshman Prasad Singh, the coal belt DIG, while talking to reporters on Sunday said breath analysers from Dhanbad would be introduced in Bokaro to conduct surprise inspections. Those found guilty will be brought to book.
Police will also keep strict vigil on those drinking in public places and also at roadside kiosks which is often drunkards’ hub. On coal smuggling Singh warned that illegal miners will face the music. He pointed out that more than 2300 metric tonnes of illegal coal had been seized in Bokaro during the past two days. Out of the total coal recovered, about 2000 metric tonnes of coal was seized from Mahuatand, about 90km away from the district headquarters, on February 3. The raids were conducted at three factories — Balaji Coke at Gangpur, Sri Balaji Coke at Tilaiya and Durga Coke at Khakhanda, Bokaro.
The remaining 300 metric tonnes were found at Amlabad and Nawadih on February 4. The estimated value of the haul is over Rs 1 crore. Singh also urged the coal companies to step up against illegal mining and assured them of security if needed. About 200 brick kilns of Dhanbad and Bokaro will also be on the vigil radar. Many kilns solely depend on coal supplied by smugglers.
Singh also hinted at the existing link between illegal coal miners and rebels in remote areas as the later might collect levy from the former. But no concrete evidence has been found in this regard at present.
