Fisheries Minister S.Sarma unveiling the digital system for forecasting potential fishing zones at Mariyanad. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fisheries Minister S.Sarma has said that digital system for forecasting potential fishing zones will soon be set up all along the Kerala coast. He was inaugurating the facility, developed by the Kerala State Remote Sensing and Environment Centre (KSREC) in collaboration with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), at Mariyanad, near here. The system, based on remote sensing, also gives data on the state of the ocean and even tsunami early warning forecast. The technology used is based on the behavioural patterns of fishes that are closely related to the surrounding environmental conditions. Information on the changes in oceanographic features such as sea water temperature, ocean colour (Chlorophyll) fronts, eddies, gyres, currents and upwelling obtained from satellites are correlated with availability and abundance of pelagic fishes. The meeting was presided over by M.A.Wahid MLA. State Remote Sensing director Jose Issac, INCOIS scientist Sreenivas Kumar, KSREC scientist N.C.Anilkumar, C.E.Paul, Fr.Cleetus Gomez and Snagappan also spoke on the occasion.
