Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday said that energy efficiency and renewable technologies would have to go hand-in-hand to overcome present power shortage. She appealed to all concerned persons in the Capital to ensure that Delhi emerged as the greenest city not only due to the greenery as a result of trees but also because of a paradigm shift towards greater use of green energy. Dikshit was delivering her inaugural address in a two-day national seminar on Solar Energy Development - Need of the Hour organised by the Delhi Productivity Council as part of its Golden Jubilee Year 2008-09. Secretary, Union Ministry of Labour and Rehabilitation Sudha Pillai, former Director CBI Joginder Singh, former Member UPSC Bhure Lal and Power Secretary Rajendra Kumar also participated in the inaugural session. The Chief Minister added that her Government has been offering encouragement on installation of solar heaters in the Capital. Installation of solar heaters has been made mandatory in hospitals, hotels and large Government buildings apart from providing rebate on their installation. She, however, expressed concern over the fact that the people were unaware about solar energy appliances and were reluctant to go for these appliances due to their cost. She stressed the need to bring awareness about the benefits of solar energy appliances. The Chief Minister indicated that her Government might grant certain financial assistance for suitable propagation of solar energy appliances. Dikshit responded favourably to a suggestion mooted by Joginder Singh that certain colonies should be developed exclusively as solar energy based localities. Dikshit emphasised that since heating water with electricity is the most in-efficient way of using energy and it is here solar energy could prove handy. A beginning has been made towards green technology and still a lot has to be achieved in commercial, non-commercial and domestic sectors.
