KOLKATA, 27 MAY: Union finance minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee today said that the ministry has set a target for collection of direct taxes of Rs 5.7 lakh crore for the 2012-13 financial year with hassle-free income-tax return. He said this while inaugurating an Aaykar Seva Kendra (ASK) in the income-tax office building at Bamboo Villa. This is the second such facility after Chinsurah in Hooghly district. Two more such facilities will soon be functional at Durgapur and Jalpaiguri, said the minister.
“The efforts are on at the departmental level to enhance the direct tax revenue, by promoting increased voluntary and transparent tax payments, so that the direct tax revenue contributes at least 12 per cent of India's GDP,” he said. Mr Mukherjee said, the new system, equipped with the one-window facility available at the new ASK is a step forward to facilitate easy and hassle-free submission of tax and provide fast and hassle-free solutions to various problems faced by the tax-payers.
This will also address the grievances and work as a redressal unit. Mr Mukherjee told the departmental officers to ensure disposal of departmental action against erring officials within their service career.
The ASK is an initiative to provide quality tax payment service in order to achieve the target set by the finance ministry. The ASK is a front office backed by re-engineered processes which would cater to the need of the assessees under the jurisdiction of as many as 75 assessing offices. The services offered at the ASK would include receiving all the returns of income and other correspondence, regardless of the designation of the assessing officer.
Mr Laxman Das, Chairman-Central Board of Direct Taxes, was present in the occasion.
