Disclose water quality data, top court tells waste facility

Japan's Supreme Court on Friday ordered a Tama, western Tokyo, regional union that manages a waste disposal facility in Hinodemachi, western Tokyo, to disclose data to local residents about the quality of water surrounding the site. While upholding a lower court ruling, however, the top court decided that part of the information sought by residents was impossible for the union to provide because it was not on record. Residents around the waste disposal sites filed a suit against the Hinodemachi municipal government and the union, which comprises 26 cities and Hinodemachi in the Tama area, claiming there was a possibility that underground water was contaminated by waste. The residents demanded that data on water quality be disclosed.
