Displaced face flood threat

Kadapa/Kurnool, Sept. 8: The displaced persons of the Gandikota project face a threat of floods due to the overflowing of the Kundu and Penna rivers. The two rivers are overflowing following heavy rains in the catchment areas for the last few days in the district. Due to heavy rains in the adjacent Anantapur district and moderate rains in Kadapa district, a heavy quantity of floodwater is flowing into the Kundu and Pennar rivers, giving a tough time to displaced persons of the Gandikota project. Floodwater has entered the villages of Buggapatnam, Obanapeta, Gandlur, Seethapuram, Jwarapupalle, Choutapalle, Bommepalle in Kondapur mandal. The entire Parnampalle village in Lingala mandal has been surrounded by floodwater due to overflowing of the Chitravathi river. Residents of Kodapur, Lingala, Simhadripuiram and Muddanur areas where Gandikota project works are continuing, are facing problems as floodwaters entered their houses as authorities have failed to provide them rehabilitation so far. Due to heavy inflows of floodwaters, the Gandikota, Chitravathi, Penna, Kundu and mid-Manair rivers are overflowing. Also, crop over hundreds of acres which was ready for harvesting, were submerged in floodwaters.
Meanwhile, the Kundu river is receiving huge inflows of floodwaters following heavy rains in the catchment areas of Nallamala forests and also release of irrigation water into the Telugu Ganga, K-C canal and SRSB main canals. People residing in the catchment area of the Kundu river are a worried lot. The river is also receiving huge inflows from the Galeru, Nippalavagu, Maddileru, Paleru and Chama streams. Due to a heavy inflow of 30,000 cusecs, the Kundu river which has a capacity of 40,000 cusecs was in spate on Monday. People residing in Harijanawada, Karimullanagar, Baitipeta areas of Nandyal town have shifted to safer places as a precautionary measure. Floodwater is flowing over the Maddileru bridge disconnecting the road link.
Meanwhile, authorities warned fishermen, washermen and those who collect sand not to go near the Kundu river. Authorities have also cautioned people residing near the river to be on the alert.
The vehicular traffic to Karnataka has been badly disrupted, subjecting passengers to difficulties, following damages to several bridges on various roads leading to that state due to heavy rains for the last one week. Two bridges have collapsed on the Moka route while another bridge on the Katra stream was damaged near Chitrakunta on the borders of the state. Floodwater is also overflowing near Hagiri on the Valagunda road. Traffic was also affected after the road near Chillagurki on Guntakal route was damaged. Similarly, the road was badly damaged between Uravakonda-Bellary.
