Concerned over the rise in pollution levels in the city along with soil and water contamination, the Delhi government has awarded a project to the Delhi University for mapping the soil, water and air pollutants district wise. The project, spanning 18 months, will help the government's action plan to control the rising pollution levels in the city. The environment department of the city government has called for district-wise mapping of the levels of metal contamination in the soil and water along with the air pollutants. The study will look into magnesium, lead, arsenic and other metal contamination in soil and water. Delhi University's School of Environmental Sciences (SES) will conduct the study. The government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 18 lakhs for the project. The SES has also been asked to study the quality of soil, water and air at the micro level. In its brief to the SES, the environment department has also called for the study of the roads and transport modes at the district levels and their relation to existing pollutants.
