Dehradun District Magistrate Ravinath Raman has broken the impasse between the Landour Cantonment Board and the Municipal Council (MC) of Mussoorie over garbage dumping in the cantonment area.
Raman, who was briefed about the issue by Mussoorie SDM Shalini Negi yesterday, directed the Municipal Council to lift garbage from the Landour Cantonment Board area for three months and dump it in its trenching yard at Gadhikhana. He issued a written order to the civic body in this regard, sources said.
The District Magistrate also directed the Landour Cantonment Board authorities to find land for a trenching ground in its area in three months to provide a permanent solution to the problem. The Municipal Council used to collect garbage from the cantonment area for a charge of Rs 40,000 per month. However, it discontinued the practice following differences between MC president Manmohan Singh Mall and vice-president of the Landour Cantonment Board Mahesh Chand over the allotment of the Kholhukhet eco-tax barrier to private parties.
The ego clash between the two leaders led to the Landour Cantonment Board authorities dumping garbage first near Mullingar and later near Lakshmanpuri. However, at both places local residents opposed the dumping of garbage.
Meanwhile, Mahesh Chand under pressure from the people of his area met Mussoorie SDM Shalini Negi yesterday and requested her to restore the old practice of garbage lifting from the cantonment area by the council.
The SDM apprised the District Magistrate about the matter following which the latter ordered the Municipal Council in writing to lift garbage from the cantonment area and gave the board authorities to make its own arrangements.
Although temporarily, residents of Landour have heaved a sigh of relief and commended the District Magistrate for his decision.
